Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW) were a British songwriting and production trio consisting of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman who dominated British pop charts in the late 1980s. Their hi-NRG-influenced productions for artists including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Rick Astley, and Bananarama produced over 100 UK Top 40 hits. The 'Hit Factory' approach prioritized catchy hooks and dance rhythms over artistic depth. SAW's influence on British pop production was immense, though critics dismissed their formulaic approach. They represented pop music at its most commercially efficient.
