Stanley Clarke is an American bassist whose virtuosic technique and innovative approach made him one of the most influential figures in jazz fusion. As a founding member of Return to Forever with Chick Corea, he helped define the fusion sound. His solo career demonstrated remarkable range from jazz to funk to film scoring. Clarke's influence on bass playing, particularly his melodic approach to the electric bass, changed how the instrument was perceived. He represented jazz bass at its most technically accomplished and musically ambitious.
