Roger McGuinn is an American musician who, as founder and frontman of The Byrds, pioneered folk rock and country rock. His distinctive twelve-string Rickenbacker guitar sound became one of rock's most imitated tones. The Byrds' covers of Dylan songs and their original material like 'Eight Miles High' defined the mid-1960s sound. McGuinn's subsequent solo career continued exploring folk rock territory. His influence on rock guitar, particularly his jangly twelve-string style, extended through generations of bands from Tom Petty to R.E.M. McGuinn represented folk rock's most innovative possibilities.
