Public Enemy are an American hip-hop group from Long Island, New York, formed in 1985 who became one of the most influential and politically significant acts in music history. Their dense, sample-heavy production (created by the Bomb Squad) and Chuck D's powerful, politically charged lyrics addressed racism, media manipulation, and social injustice. Albums 'It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back' and 'Fear of a Black Planet' are considered among hip-hop's greatest achievements. Flava Flav's hype man role added theatrical contrast. Public Enemy's influence on hip-hop and political music extended far beyond their commercial success.
