Nucleus were a British jazz-rock band formed in 1969 by trumpeter Ian Carr, becoming pioneers of British jazz fusion. Their debut album 'Elastic Rock' (1970) established their approach combining jazz improvisation with rock energy. The band won the top prize at the 1970 Montreux Jazz Festival. Nucleus's rotating lineup featured many significant British jazz musicians across their existence. Ian Carr's leadership and compositional vision guided the group through numerous albums exploring jazz-rock territory. Nucleus's influence on British jazz and fusion was substantial. They represented the adventurous spirit of late 1960s and 1970s jazz.
