The Motels were an American new wave band from Los Angeles fronted by vocalist Martha Davis. Their blend of new wave rock with emotional ballads produced hits including 'Only the Lonely,' 'Suddenly Last Summer,' and 'Take the L.' Davis's distinctive voice and the band's sophisticated arrangements distinguished them from more minimalist new wave acts. 'Only the Lonely' achieved international success and remains their signature song. The Motels represented American new wave's more emotional, romantic side, proving that the genre could encompass sophisticated adult themes. Their influence on subsequent female-fronted rock bands was notable.
