Lynyrd Skynyrd are an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, who became the definitive Southern rock band of the 1970s. Classics including 'Sweet Home Alabama,' 'Free Bird,' and 'Simple Man' defined the genre and remain rock radio staples. The triple-guitar lineup created a powerful, distinctive sound. Their 1977 plane crash killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines, along with others. The band reformed in 1987 with surviving members and Van Zant's brother Johnny on vocals. 'Free Bird,' with its extended guitar solo, became one of rock's most requested songs. Lynyrd Skynyrd's influence on Southern rock and country rock extends through subsequent generations of artists.
