Long John Baldry was a British blues singer whose influential presence in the 1960s British blues scene helped launch the careers of Rod Stewart and Elton John, both of whom performed in his bands. His commanding presence (he was 6'7") and powerful voice made him a charismatic performer. Baldry achieved commercial success with 'Let the Heartaches Begin,' though the easy listening material frustrated blues purists. His commitment to blues and R&B influenced the British rock that emerged in the 1960s. Baldry later relocated to Canada and continued performing until his death in 2005. His importance to British rock history lies not just in his own performances but in his mentorship of future superstars.
