Lloyd Price is an American R&B and rock and roll singer known as 'Mr. Personality' after his 1959 hit of the same name. His earlier recording 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy' (1952) is considered one of rock and roll's foundational recordings. 'Stagger Lee,' his retelling of the folk murder ballad, topped the pop and R&B charts in 1959. Price's success demonstrated that Black artists could achieve mainstream pop success during the early rock era. His entrepreneurial activities extended beyond performing to record labels and other businesses. Price's influence on rock and roll's development and his chart success during a transitional era in American music established him as an important figure in popular music history.
