Karl Richter was a German conductor, organist, and harpsichordist who became one of the most important interpreters of Bach's music in the mid-20th century. His recordings with the Munich Bach Orchestra and Choir set standards for Baroque performance before the period instrument revolution. Richter's interpretations emphasized dramatic intensity and spiritual depth, treating Bach's music as living art rather than museum pieces. His complete recordings of Bach's major choral works remain influential despite changing performance practice philosophies. Richter's organ performances demonstrated virtuosity combined with structural understanding. His influence on Bach interpretation, though now seen through the lens of subsequent historical performance developments, was foundational for modern Bach reception.
