His sophisticated guitar technique and smooth vocal delivery made him one of the first African American artists to achieve mainstream success with white audiences. White was a significant figure in the 1940s and 1950s folk revival, performing at Carnegie Hall and for President Franklin Roosevelt. His recordings addressed civil rights issues with songs like 'Strange Fruit' before Billie Holiday's famous version. White's influence extended through folk into the civil rights movement. His combination of musical excellence with social activism established a template for subsequent generations of folk artists.
