His work with Miles Davis on 'Bitches Brew' and 'A Tribute to Jack Johnson' helped create jazz fusion. The Mahavishnu Orchestra, featuring McLaughlin's blazing electric guitar, defined the genre's possibilities with albums like 'The Inner Mounting Flame.' His acoustic group Shakti explored Indian classical music with unprecedented depth. McLaughlin's technical mastery, combining jazz, rock, flamenco, and Indian influences, expanded the guitar's vocabulary. His spiritual seeking, influenced by Sri Chinmoy and later Indian traditions, informed his musical journey. McLaughlin's influence on subsequent guitarists across genres has been immense.
