Joe Henderson was an American jazz tenor saxophonist whose career spanned bebop, hard bop, jazz fusion, and post-bop. His distinctive, smooth tone and creative improvisational approach made him one of jazz's most respected musicians. Henderson's 1960s Blue Note recordings established his reputation, while later albums like 'Lush Life' (featuring Billy Strayhorn compositions) brought him mainstream recognition and Grammy Awards. His ability to bring fresh perspectives to standard material demonstrated his continued creativity. Henderson's influence on subsequent tenor saxophonists was substantial, particularly his approach to ballad interpretation. His late-career success proved that artistic integrity could eventually achieve commercial recognition.
