Gracie Fields was a British actress, singer, and comedian who became one of the most beloved entertainers in Britain during the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Rochdale, Lancashire, she rose from music hall performer to become the highest-paid film star in Britain. Her warm, powerful voice and authentic working-class charm endeared her to audiences, and her songs 'Sally,' 'The Biggest Aspidistra in the World,' and 'Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye' became hugely popular. During World War II, she was a major morale-boosting entertainer for Allied troops, though her marriage to Italian-born director Monty Banks complicated her public image. Fields received the DBE and remained active until her retirement in the 1970s. Her legacy as a symbol of British working-class spirit and entertainment continues to resonate.
