Artist: Gene Mcdaniels
Genre: R&B/Pop
Gene McDaniels was an American R&B singer and songwriter who achieved success in the early 1960s before transitioning to a more political and socially conscious musical direction. His early hits, including 'A Hundred Pounds of Clay,' 'Tower of Strength,' and 'Point of No Return,' established him as a smooth, commercially successful vocalist. In the late 1960s and 1970s, McDaniels evolved artistically, releasing more challenging albums that addressed social issues. His songwriting skills were showcased when Roberta Flack recorded his composition 'Feel Like Makin' Love,' which became a major hit. McDaniels also wrote songs for other artists and worked in film scoring. His career arc from pop hitmaker to socially conscious artist reflects the broader changes in American music during the turbulent 1960s and 1970s.
