Eric Gale was an American jazz and session guitarist born in 1938, who became one of the most recorded guitarists in popular music. Gale's smooth, melodic playing made him hugely successful as a session musician, appearing on countless soul, R&B, jazz, and pop recordings. He worked with artists including Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Van Morrison, among many others. Gale's guitar style combined jazz sophistication with R&B soul and pop accessibility, making him versatile across contexts. He released numerous solo albums showcasing his smooth jazz style. Gale's playing was characterized by clean tone, melodic lines, and groove-oriented approach. He was a founding member of the fusion group Stuff. Gale passed away in 1994. He represented the session guitarist who could work across genres while maintaining jazz credibility, demonstrating the importance of versatile, tasteful guitarists in popular music production.
