Dory Previn was an American singer-songwriter born in 1925, who became prominent in the early 1970s as a confessional songwriter addressing personal struggles and feminist themes. Originally a lyricist for film and television with her husband André Previn, Dory Previn launched a solo career after their divorce. Her albums featured deeply personal, often disturbing lyrics addressing mental illness, relationships, and women's experiences. Songs like 'Beware of Young Girls' addressed her husband leaving her for Mia Farrow. Previn's theatrical, narrative songwriting influenced later confessional songwriters. Her work was critically acclaimed for its honesty and literary quality. Previn also wrote musicals and returned to film work. She passed away in 2012. Previn represented confessional songwriting before it became common, demonstrating that women could write explicitly about personal pain and mental health in popular music.
