Artist: De La Soul
Genre: Hip-Hop
De La Soul are an American hip-hop group formed in New York in 1988, consisting of Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove (who passed away in 2023), and Maseo. The group revolutionized hip-hop with their debut album '3 Feet High and Rising,' which introduced a playful, eclectic approach to hip-hop incorporating diverse samples and skits. De La Soul were central to the Native Tongues collective, promoting positivity and Afrocentricity in hip-hop. Their music challenged gangsta rap's dominance, demonstrating hip-hop's creative possibilities. Albums like 'De La Soul Is Dead' and 'Stakes Is High' showcased their evolution and artistic depth. De La Soul influenced countless alternative and underground hip-hop artists. Their catalog has been unavailable on streaming services due to sampling clearance issues, but their influence on hip-hop is immeasurable. They represent hip-hop's artistic, experimental wing.
