Artist: Curtis Mayfield
Genre: Soul
Curtis Mayfield was an American soul, funk, and R&B singer-songwriter and producer born in 1942, who became one of the most important and influential figures in soul music. Mayfield first achieved success as leader of The Impressions, scoring hits including 'People Get Ready' and 'Keep On Pushing.' As a solo artist, Mayfield created socially conscious soul and funk, addressing civil rights, poverty, and social issues. His soundtrack to the film 'Superfly' in 1972 became one of the most successful and influential soul albums ever, featuring classics like the title track and 'Freddie's Dead.' Mayfield's falsetto vocals, innovative guitar playing, and sophisticated arrangements influenced countless artists. A stage accident in 1990 left him paralyzed, but he continued recording until his death in 1999. Mayfield's legacy as a songwriter, performer, and social commentator makes him one of soul music's most important and respected figures.
