Colosseum were a British jazz rock band formed in 1968 by drummer Jon Hiseman. The band were pioneers of jazz-rock fusion, combining powerful rock with sophisticated jazz improvisation. Their lineup included talented musicians like saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith, bassist Tony Reeves, and guitarist James Litherland (later replaced by Dave Greenslade). Colosseum's music featured extended instrumental passages, complex time signatures, and virtuosic soloing. Albums like 'Valentyne Suite' and 'Daughter of Time' are considered jazz-rock classics. The band's powerful, often heavy sound influenced the development of progressive rock and jazz fusion. After initial breakup in 1971, Colosseum reformed in 1994 and continued performing until Hiseman's death in 2018. They represented British jazz-rock at its most ambitious, bridging jazz complexity with rock power and demonstrating that improvisation and heaviness could coexist.
