Autopsy are an American death metal band formed in San Francisco in 1987 by drummer Chris Reifert after leaving Death. The band became one of the most influential groups in death metal, known for their slow, heavy, horror-influenced sound that helped pioneer the death-doom subgenre. Their seminal albums 'Severed Survival' and 'Mental Funeral' are considered classics of extreme metal. After initially disbanding in 1995, Autopsy reformed in 2009 and has continued releasing albums maintaining their reputation for uncompromising brutality.
