The Auteurs were an English alternative rock band formed in London in 1991 by songwriter Luke Haines, becoming one of the more intelligent and caustic voices in the Britpop era. While associated with Britpop, The Auteurs maintained a darker, more literary approach with Haines' sardonic lyrics addressing suburban alienation, class, and English culture with biting wit. Their debut album 'New Wave' in 1993 received critical acclaim. Though critically respected and nominated for the Mercury Prize, they never achieved commercial success comparable to Blur or Oasis.
