Audience were a British art rock band formed in London in 1969, known for their unique sound that combined folk, jazz, and progressive rock elements. The band featured Howard Werth on vocals and guitar and Keith Gemmell on saxophone and flute, giving them a distinctive instrumentation. Audience's music was characterized by complex arrangements, acoustic instrumentation, and literary lyrics. They released several albums in the early 1970s including 'House on the Hill' and 'Lunch,' which showcased their eclectic approach to progressive rock. Unlike many progressive bands of the era, Audience maintained a more intimate, folk-influenced sound rather than pursuing grand symphonic ambitions. Though they never achieved major commercial success and disbanded in 1972, Audience has been rediscovered by progressive rock enthusiasts who appreciate their unique approach. The band reformed in 2004 and has continued to perform and record.
