At the Gates are a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in Gothenburg in 1990, becoming pioneers and leading figures in the Gothenburg melodic death metal scene. Founded by guitarist Tomas Lindberg and members from earlier bands, At the Gates created a distinctive sound combining death metal aggression with melodic guitar harmonies and complex song structures. Their 1995 album 'Slaughter of the Soul' is considered one of the most influential metal albums ever made, essentially defining the melodic death metal genre and influencing countless metalcore and melodic death metal bands.
