Ashley Hutchings is an English bassist, known as a founding member of three of the most important British folk rock bands: Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, and The Albion Band. Born in 1945, Hutchings has been called the 'father of folk rock' for his pioneering work in fusing traditional English folk music with rock instrumentation. His vision and bass playing were fundamental to Fairport Convention's transformation from folk-influenced pop to full electric folk rock. After leaving Fairport, Hutchings co-founded Steeleye Span and later The Albion Band, each project exploring different aspects of British folk tradition. His dedication to preserving and revitalizing English folk music while making it relevant to contemporary audiences has been his life's work. Hutchings' influence on British folk rock is immeasurable, and he continues to be active in various folk music projects, maintaining his role as a guardian and innovator of the tradition.
