Arturo Toscanini was an Italian conductor, widely considered one of the greatest and most influential conductors in classical music history. Born in 1867, Toscanini's career spanned from the late 19th century until his retirement in 1954. He was music director of La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New York Philharmonic, and famously led the NBC Symphony Orchestra created especially for him. Toscanini was known for his photographic memory, conducting entire operas from memory, his fierce dedication to the composer's intentions, and his refusal to indulge in excessive interpretative liberties. He passed away in 1957.
