Arthur Baker is an American record producer, DJ, and remixer who played a crucial role in the development of hip-hop and dance music in the 1980s. Born in 1955, Baker produced some of hip-hop's earliest and most influential tracks, including Afrika Bambaataa's 'Planet Rock' in 1982, which pioneered the use of the Roland TR-808 drum machine in hip-hop and helped create electro-funk. He also produced or remixed tracks for numerous artists including New Order ('Confusion'), Bruce Springsteen, and Hall & Oates. Baker's production style combined hip-hop beats with electronic music and rock elements, helping to bring hip-hop to mainstream audiences. His work on the 'Beat Street' soundtrack further promoted hip-hop culture. Baker has been influential in both hip-hop and dance music, bridging underground and mainstream, and helping to establish the remix as an art form. He continues to work in music production and DJing.
