X-Ray Spex were a British punk rock band formed in London in 1976, fronted by the charismatic Poly Styrene. Their music, featuring Lora Logic's distinctive saxophone, created a unique sound within punk. Their album 'Germfree Adolescents' and singles including 'Oh Bondage Up Yours!' and 'Identity' addressed consumerism, identity, and conformity with intelligence and energy. Poly Styrene's biracial identity and feminist perspective brought important dimensions to punk discourse. X-Ray Spex's influence on subsequent punk, riot grrrl, and alternative rock was substantial. They represented punk at its most creatively distinctive and socially conscious.
