Woody Herman was an American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, and bandleader whose orchestras, known as 'The Herd,' were among the most innovative big bands in jazz history. From the 1930s through the 1980s, Herman led bands that introduced important jazz musicians and embraced contemporary developments. His bands' recordings, from 'Woodchopper's Ball' through bebop-influenced work, documented big band jazz's evolution. Herman's ability to adapt to changing musical times while maintaining artistic quality distinguished him from contemporaries. He represented big band jazz's continued vitality across five decades.
