W.A.S.P. are an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles formed in 1982 whose theatrical, controversial approach made them one of the 1980s' most notorious metal acts. Led by Blackie Lawless, their provocative stage shows and songs including 'Animal (F**k Like a Beast)' and 'I Wanna Be Somebody' attracted both devoted fans and conservative opposition, including mention in the PMRC hearings. Albums 'W.A.S.P.' and 'The Last Command' achieved platinum success. W.A.S.P.'s influence on shock rock and glam metal was substantial. They represented heavy metal at its most theatrical and controversial.
