Tin Machine were a rock band featuring David Bowie alongside guitarist Reeves Gabrels, bassist Tony Sales, and drummer Hunt Sales. Formed in 1988 as Bowie sought to escape solo artist expectations, the band pursued aggressive, guitar-driven rock. Their democratic approach—all members were credited equally—was unusual for an artist of Bowie's stature. Though commercially and critically divisive, Tin Machine represented Bowie's continued artistic restlessness and his desire to challenge audience expectations. The experience influenced Bowie's subsequent 1990s work.
