Throwing Muses are an American alternative rock band formed in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1983, led by Kristin Hersh. They became one of the first American bands signed to 4AD Records, bringing their angular, emotionally intense sound to international audiences. Hersh's distinctive voice and unconventional songwriting created challenging but rewarding music. Tanya Donelly, later of Belly, was an early member. Throwing Muses' influence on alternative rock, particularly female-fronted bands, was substantial. They represented alternative rock at its most uncompromising and personal.
