Shriekback were a British new wave and art rock band formed in 1981 by Barry Andrews (formerly of XTC) and Dave Allen (formerly of Gang of Four). Their music combined funk rhythms with atmospheric electronics and intelligent lyrics. Albums like 'Care' and 'Oil & Gold' earned critical acclaim, while 'Nemesis' achieved cult status. Shriekback's sophisticated approach to post-punk influenced subsequent alternative artists. Their willingness to combine dance rhythms with art-rock ambitions created a distinctive sound. Shriekback represented new wave's most intellectually engaging possibilities.
