His sophisticated technique and musical sensitivity made him a first-call session drummer in both jazz and commercial contexts. Manne's club, Shelly's Manne-Hole, became an important venue for West Coast jazz. His recordings as a leader and sideman documented jazz drumming at its most musical and supportive. Manne's influence on jazz drumming and his contribution to the West Coast jazz sound was substantial.
