The Runaways were an American all-female rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1975 who became pioneers for women in rock music. Featuring Joan Jett, Lita Ford, and Cherie Currie among their members, they played aggressive, punk-influenced hard rock. Their hit 'Cherry Bomb' became an anthem. Though commercial success was limited in America, they achieved popularity in Japan. The Runaways' influence on subsequent female rock musicians was immense, proving that women could play hard rock on equal terms with men. Their legacy grew as members achieved solo success.
