R.E.M. were an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980 who became one of the first alternative rock bands to achieve mainstream success. Michael Stipe's enigmatic vocals, Peter Buck's jangly guitar, Mike Mills' melodic bass, and Bill Berry's steady drumming created a distinctive sound. Early albums like 'Murmur' and 'Reckoning' defined college rock, while 'Document,' 'Green,' and 'Out of Time' brought them to massive audiences. Hits including 'Losing My Religion,' 'Man on the Moon,' and 'Everybody Hurts' became defining songs of their era.
