Quilapayún are a Chilean folk music group formed in 1965 who became leading figures in the Nueva Canción movement combining traditional Andean music with political activism. Their music supported Salvador Allende's government, and they were abroad when the 1973 coup occurred, beginning decades of exile. Songs like 'El Pueblo Unido Jamás Será Vencido' became international anthems of resistance. Quilapayún's influence on Latin American protest music and their demonstration of folk music's political power was immense. They represented music's potential as a tool for social change and cultural preservation.
