Procol Harum were a British rock band formed in 1967, best known for their debut single 'A Whiter Shade of Pale,' which became one of the most played songs in broadcasting history. Gary Brooker's soulful voice and classically-influenced piano, combined with Matthew Fisher's Bach-inspired organ, created a distinctive sound that bridged rock and classical music. Subsequent albums explored progressive territory while maintaining their melodic gifts. Songs like 'Conquistador' and 'Homburg' continued their success. Procol Harum's influence on progressive rock and their demonstration that rock could incorporate classical elements without losing emotional power was substantial. They represented rock's orchestral possibilities.
