The Pretenders are an Anglo-American rock band formed in 1978, led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Chrissie Hynde. Their combination of punk attitude with classic rock songcraft produced enduring hits including 'Brass in Pocket,' 'Back on the Chain Gang,' 'I'll Stand by You,' and 'Don't Get Me Wrong.' Hynde's distinctive voice and tough, romantic songwriting defined the band's sound across lineup changes following the tragic deaths of original members James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon. The Pretenders demonstrated that rock could be both commercially successful and artistically uncompromising. Hynde's influence as a female rock frontwoman who succeeded on her own terms inspired countless subsequent artists.
