Play Dead were a British gothic rock band from Oxford who emerged in the early 1980s as part of the post-punk gothic scene. Their atmospheric sound, combining dark bass-driven music with passionate vocals, earned them a devoted following among goth enthusiasts. Though they never achieved mainstream success, Play Dead were respected within the gothic rock community for their uncompromising approach. Their music represented the darker possibilities of post-punk, exploring themes of alienation and despair with musical intensity. Play Dead contributed to the development of gothic rock during a formative period for the genre.
