Plasmatics were an American punk rock and heavy metal band formed in New York City in 1977, notorious for their destructive stage shows and outrageous imagery. Led by Wendy O. Williams, whose extreme performances included chainsaw-ing guitars and blowing up cars, they pushed punk's shock tactics to extremes. Their music combined punk aggression with heavy metal power. The Plasmatics' influence on subsequent shock rock and their demonstration that women could be as transgressive as male performers was notable. Williams' tragic suicide in 1998 ended the possibility of reunion, but their legend endures among extreme music fans.
