Placebo are a British alternative rock band formed in London in 1994 by vocalist-guitarist Brian Molko and bassist Stefan Olsdal. Their androgynous image and emotionally intense music addressing themes of sexuality, drug use, and alienation earned them a devoted international following. Hits including 'Nancy Boy,' 'Pure Morning,' 'Every You Every Me,' and 'The Bitter End' combined pop hooks with dark subject matter. Placebo achieved particular success in continental Europe while maintaining credibility as an alternative act. Their influence on subsequent bands exploring similar territory and their representation of gender fluidity in rock were significant.
