Public Image Ltd (PiL) were a British post-punk band formed in 1978 by John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) after the Sex Pistols' dissolution. Their experimental approach, incorporating dub, avant-garde, and world music influences, pushed post-punk toward new territories. Albums including 'Metal Box' (later 'Second Edition') and 'The Flowers of Romance' are considered landmark experimental rock recordings. Bassist Jah Wobble's dub-influenced playing and Lydon's confrontational vocals created a sound unlike anything else. PiL's influence on post-punk, industrial, and alternative music was substantial. They demonstrated that punk's creative destruction could yield genuinely innovative music.
