Omar Rodríguez-López is a Puerto Rican guitarist, songwriter, and producer best known as a founding member of At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta. His virtuosic guitar playing and ambitious compositional approach helped define progressive rock's 21st-century evolution. The Mars Volta's albums combined Latin music, progressive rock, and experimental elements into a distinctive sound. Rodríguez-López's prolific solo output has explored various territories from ambient to rock. His collaborations with bandmate Cedric Bixler-Zavala produced some of alternative rock's most ambitious music. Rodríguez-López represented the continued potential for progressive rock experimentation in contemporary contexts.
