Om are an American band formed by Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius after the dissolution of Sleep. Their music combines doom metal's heaviness with Middle Eastern influences, mantric repetition, and spiritual themes. The duo format of bass and drums (later expanding to include additional instruments) created hypnotic, transcendent music. Albums like 'Conference of the Birds' and 'Advaitic Songs' earned critical acclaim among fans of heavy, meditative music. Om's influence on doom and drone music, particularly their incorporation of devotional elements, distinguished them from genre contemporaries. They represented heavy music's spiritual possibilities.
