Ofra Haza was an Israeli singer and actress whose unique blend of traditional Yemenite Jewish music with contemporary pop and dance production made her an international star. Her album 'Fifty Gates of Wisdom' adapted Yemenite songs with modern production, and its sampling by Eric B. & Rakim on 'Paid in Full' introduced her to club audiences. Songs like 'Im Nin'alu' achieved worldwide success. Haza represented Israel in Eurovision and became her country's most famous musical export. Her death from AIDS-related illness in 2000 was mourned internationally. Haza's influence on world music and her demonstration that traditional sounds could achieve contemporary pop success was substantial.
