New Riders of the Purple Sage are an American country rock band formed in San Francisco in 1969 with connections to the Grateful Dead. Originally featuring Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar, they became part of the Bay Area music scene that blended rock with country influences. Their self-titled debut and subsequent albums established them as significant contributors to country rock's development. The band's improvisational approach, influenced by their Dead connections, distinguished them from more straightforward country rock acts. New Riders continued performing across decades with various lineups. They represented the hippie country movement that brought rock sensibilities to country music.
