Artist: New Philharmonia Orchestra
Genre: Classical
The New Philharmonia Orchestra was the name used by the Philharmonia Orchestra from 1964 to 1977, during which it continued as one of Britain's leading orchestras. Founded originally in 1945 by Walter Legge primarily for recordings, the orchestra worked with legendary conductors including Otto Klemperer, whose tenure during the 'New Philharmonia' period produced landmark recordings. Their discography under this name includes essential interpretations of Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler. The orchestra reverted to its original name in 1977. The New Philharmonia recordings remain treasured documents of mid-20th century orchestral performance at its finest, representing London's position as a world center for classical recording.
