Nena is a German singer whose 1983 hit '99 Luftballons' (and its English version '99 Red Balloons') became an international phenomenon. The anti-war song, featuring a memorable synthesizer riff, addressed Cold War nuclear tensions through an allegory about balloons triggering military alarm. The song topped charts across Europe and reached number two in the US and UK. Nena remained popular in Germany though international success proved difficult to repeat.
