Artist: Neil
Genre: Comedy/Pop
Neil was the character performed by Nigel Planer in the British television comedy 'The Young Ones.' The character released a cover version of Traffic's 'Hole in My Shoe' that reached number two on the UK charts in 1984. The single's success demonstrated the crossover potential between television comedy and pop music in 1980s Britain. Neil's hippie persona and the song's psychedelic nature created an effective comedic juxtaposition. The recording represented the British tradition of comedy characters achieving genuine chart success through novelty recordings connected to popular television shows.
